Is this story 100% true — or only loud?
An old story does not need to be true to be powerful. It only needs to be familiar.
When we ask honestly whether the story is true, we usually discover that it is at best a fragment, written long ago, by a younger version of us trying to keep us safe.
This is not a debate. It is a softening of the grip.
